King Chakrawati Farmas of Malabar was a Chera king, Cheraman perumal of Kodungallure.  He is recorded to have seen the moon split.  The incident is documented in a manuscript kept at the India Office Library, London, reference number: Arabic, 2807, 152-173

That account was most likely made up after the king died. Indian Christians claim that same king lived when St. Thomas went to India in the 4th century. The manuscript which claims the king saw the miracle was not written by the king himself and cannot be dated.

Another manuscript doesn’t have the king going to Mecca until 642-43, abt a decade after Mohammed died. The Hadith that claimed the moon was split was written more than 200 yrs after Mohammed died. Stories were likely embellished or added as they with time.

Regarding the date a historical version says. The king met the prophet not in mecca but jeddahm on the 27th Shawwal, 6 years before hijrah (617 A.D).

Scholars usually look at hadith transmission orally through a chain of narration. Based on that they may accept it or not. Or check whether the hadith is strong, weak ect. But As I am Muslim and the Quran and hadith mention the splitting of the moon. Through the companions.

Oral tradition is the worst form of testimony, especially for pre-radio times. Because stories of great men were also used for entertainment at night, storytellers were tempted to keep their stories entertaining by adding details.

Take Gilgamesh for example. There was likely a king named Gilgamesh. We found his name on a list of kings written on stone. That doesn’t mean we believe he killed a demon or that the goddess Ishtar was real, as the Epic of Gilgamesh claims.

That epic was also written a few hundred years after the historical King Gilgamesh lived.

In the U.S., Davey Crocket has to keep correcting ppl who actually believed he killed a bear with his bare hands. Hunters who admired him made up stories about him that were believed long after Crocket died.

Yes but people chose to believe without looking at the backgrounds of these hunters whether they were truthful men or not. If they were known to lie a lot. Then in this case they were mostly lying.

Even those who are not know to lie will lie sometimes. Brian Williams lied about being shot at in a helicopter b/c he realized the true story he was telling wasn’t as interesting to the audience as he remembered it. Grandpas telling stories around a campfire do the same thing.

Thays why bukhari would look fully into the biography of that person.

Looking at that person’s biography means nothing if that person is just passing down what they’ve been told. There’s about 5 generations of ppl since Mohammed’s death to Bukhari’s time. You think none of those men were tempted to add a few stories for his grandkids?
