Risk of major financial crisis with system straining under bad debt; looming demographic crisis; raging pandemic worsened by party incompetence; concentration camps in Xinjiang; Hong Kong in flames. Are we heading toward a Timișoara moment?

Find myself thinking today of this concluding paragraph from Andy Nathan's 2009 reflections on "Authoritarian Impermanence"

The CCP Central Propaganda Department is now cracking down on any critical reporting about the novel by Chinese journalists & deleting social media accounts of influencers who are off-message. Tremendous reporting

The world should start covering US politics the way US journalists cover politics in like Turkmenistan Impeachment - Allies Of Strongman Leader Vote To Call No Witnesses in President’s Trial Iowa - Still No Official Results As Establishment Ally Claims Election Victory

I wrote on Wuhan, transparency, and the hypocrisy of the central Chinese govt getting ready to throw local officials under the bus for doing exactly what the system demands they do.

LNP MPs joke about murdering peaceful protesters. give us their names. Do our politicians exist to serve us, or do we exist to serve them? Maybe it’s time to issue our political class a friendly reminder that the Australian people are not their slaves.

You can call it a mistake and sack the officials responsible but it will never take back the pain and suffering inflicted on this innocent human being. And it changes nothing structurally - only an exceedingly vicious and cruel system could allow something like this to occur

Yan Cheng, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was found dead after being left home alone for six days when his father was isolated by health authorities. And we are supposed to praise the CCP’s response to the coronavirus. Brutal and inhuman

We can’t allow opposition to China’s dictatorship to lead to xenophobic attacks on the innocent people of China, the primary victims of the CCP. Just received call that innocent Chinese students studying at UQ are being held up at Brisbane airport. Can anyone confirm??

Why do the Greens always insist on Larissa Waters sharing the deputy role with a dude? Ludlam, Bandt, now McKim... it really feels like they want a lady in the leadership team but not in place of another man

An Australian taxpayer-owned theatre apologized to the Chinese government after the Chinese consul was “embarrassed” by a Taiwanese flag. Am I missing something? Why the fuck should we care what the consul thinks? Taiwan is an independent country.

Since 2012 we've seen a war on free speech, the destruction of a nascent civil society, the opening of concentration camps, a petulant attempt to crush Hong Kong, public confessions on TV like it's 1966, and now yet another disaster caused by a cover-up. I'm fucking tired.

the lesson from this whole thing: China has learnt nothing from 2003, will put ideological obsessions and nationalism in the way of international cooperation and helping its people, and the lying - the constant, constant lying - will continue unabated.

Larissa Waters. Senator from QLD rather than an MP from an inner Melbourne seat. I have nothing against Bandt but the optics on that would be terrible and hand Greens opponents a massive free-kick. Waters is intelligent, articulate, passionate. She would be an excellent leader.
