PARENTS OF BOYS: talk to me about circumcision please. We are stupid and never discussed it before he was born and we’ve booked him in for one at 8.5 weeks old and I’m wondering what you have to say about your experience.

Circumcision is one of those things that frankly if you aren't Jewish is subject to a great deal of political and parental finger wagging in the same misinformation spaces as low level anti-vaxxing. So it's complicated and ultimately cultural and personal.

There IS some medical benefit so saying there isn't is political, BUT that benefit is still available to uncircumcised men by way of good comprehensive sex education.https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-circumcision-helps-prevent-hiv-infection/ …

Prohibiting it on the basis of false equivalence to clitorectemy's and female genital mutilation is ALSO political and usually based in anti-semitic tropes and should be avoided - BUT if you aren't Jewish & you feel like it's a mutilation once again stay on top of good hygiene ed

It's a genital so people are not objective about it at all. But it's probably a lot closer to body modification than anything else -many foreskin removals are rites of manhood & happen at over 12 in other cultures that had that rite. The Jewish one is about minimal invasiveness

So all that aside there is something to be said for "matching"the family if that's how you all rolled post scientific recommendation getting most US men snipped - doing it after the 8th day is when babies have their own blood coagulanent but still some of mom's immune system

ALL of that aside - I am Jewish, I did the research, I went with a mohel that was both MD and Mohel and they will work with non Jews - I recommend to gentiles no to do it in the hospital at birth with non specialists if they are gonna - wait as if Jewish

there's a few millennia of best practices there. Also since Brises are super public things and there are daily updates on the recovery I can honestly tell you most of the time it's no big. Parents freak out worse than babies and everyone's back to normal in like 3 days.

But there should absolutely be no pressure on you to circumsize your child if you aren't religiously beholden to it. But you SHOULD educate yourself on how to teach your child about those aforementioned sex and hygene issues if you have no personal experience with them & opt out

Also honestly - gentiles going for circumcision made our sons safer during waves of antisemitism - so I'm never unaware of that.
