Dr. Kyla McMullen (K-Mac)’s Tweets

Once again, a computer is telling me that I don’t fit the “look” of my profession. I am none of the 3 identities presented as a “Computer Science professor” (old, male, White). Whelp … I guess I’ll just have to continue being a fabulous unicorn over here.

Any student that needs a face to face course to comply with this ridiculous rule by ICE (PS: Abolish ICE), I am happy to offer an independent studies course to keep you here, learning and contributing. Email me from your university account. (Post idea from )

5400 RPM = 90Hz Likely, the song has some low frequency content (~90Hz) that is oscillating at the same frequency as the hard drive. We typically use solid state now (no cycles) and this filtering is often removed by audio device manufacturers. TLDR: song make laptop go boom.

Dear #GHC19, I came here for the networking and mentoring. I am NOT here for the casual racism I experienced at registration. The attendant rudely snatched my badge from me and accused me of fraud. And you wonder why Black women don’t feel welcome in spaces like this. #iHaveVideo

Update: - chatted with admin. As-is, my indep. studies course is set up for f2f so nothing needs to be changed - the college of eng./university are researching a solution too, (ex: is one-credit sufficient?) so let’s wait for the announcement - i’ll still go rogue (if needed)

Almost 20 years ago, I attended FOCUS at to learn about graduate school and getting a #PhD. Today, as a faculty member, I get to proudly send off one of my own undergraduate researchers who was accepted into the same program. I’d deem the intervention a success 🎉

In other news, people are still expecting unpaid labor. Re: I am sorry but I cannot conduct unpaid labor at this time. Especially during BHM. Especially never. I would not be a role model to the student as you wish to serve by undervaluing my work & giving it away for free .

Happy birthday to the one and only . He’s the sole reason I’ve had all my post-PhD jobs 😂😂 I met him in 2006 (2007?) and he’s been the best model of a mentor, advocate, visionary, chair, and scholar that I could ask for! Happy Birthday!

This tweet took off fast. Too bad that I don’t have a mixtape or a SoundCloud account to promote, but You can subscribe to where we amplify the voices of Black women in computing & tech, presenting a counter-narrative for these AI models.

So..my writers’ block strategy is to just write what I’m trying to say in my own voice, & not "academic speak”. I just wrote: “Neural networks are great, but they can only work as well as the data that you put into them. Stop entering trash data and blaming the NN. *mic drop* "

So .. one of my Senior Project students created a web application that uses AI to create new melodies from existing songs. You can change various parameters and you never get the same song twice. Needless to say, I’ve been playing it all evening 😂#gatorEngineering

What am I doing today? Not much, just hanging out with the man who invented mp3. His research lab is investigating a problem my lab has solved. *bloop* Collaboration on the horizon. Side note: inclusion is as simple as this. Representative imagery goes a long way. #avar2022

I don’t know who this tweet is for but can we please stop only inviting scholars of color to speak about diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. Newsflash, we actually do ACTUAL research that oftentimes has nothing to do with DEI. Plot Twist: I know exactly who this tweet is for

You’d be surprised how much of my job consists of someone asking me a question, me Googling it, and then me interpreting the meaning of/reading the Google results back to them. Can I put this on my CV? What is this called? Creative reading?

Twice this week, on back to back days, I subjected myself to “keeping up with the kids” and re-joining the dance world. My entire body hurts but I feel great. I am currently on the floor. Please forward my mail and hold my calls.

Who decided that HGTV is the channel of choice for waiting rooms in doctors/dentists offices? Also, please don’t call me to the back so quickly. I need to see what the open concept living room looks like now that they took out 2 walls. 🤣

So … I made this keynote presentation about racism, equity, and research in the Metaverse … and it’s GOOD. Who needs a keynote? Lol. I am delivering it today over Zoom at 2pm EST. Temped to go live since the audience is a closed group.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but: Organizing, planning, and preparing to do work also count as “doing work”. Ok I lied... I’m the one who needed to hear this.🤗

So … today’s my birthday. 🥳 *hold for applause* This is your official notice that you have exactly one year remaining to nominate me for inclusion in someone’s 40 under 40 list before it is no longer true.

I set up my work & meeting commitments such that no one needs anything from me next week. Surprisingly, it wasn’t difficult at all. I am taking a week off and not opening email and it has me shooketh! Any advice for a Type A who does not know how to relax?

#ICAD21 was a huge success! I am happy to be the (co)General Chair this year & General chair next year. Here’s all the survivors who made it to the final session. I will revisit the talks on Discord when I come out of my sleep coma. Please hesitate to call me.

Also some thinking around our original question. Do you just want to be invited to the “party” but then not allowed to eat the snacks or meet other guests? And when does this exclusion of #WOC actually start? Selecting an attainable scope for our work will be important 🤔... 🧵

I miss my grandmother way more than what should be humanly allowed. I learned the fact below about 5 years ago and it weirdly comforts me in those moments. My mere existence makes me feel like I am always carrying around a piece of her ❤️ Maybe this will help someone else.
