++NEW++ UK govt statement of principles on geoengineering now covers negative emissions & SRM "[Greenhouse gas removal] technologies are likely to have an important role to play in offsetting [residual emissions]." #NegCO2 https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/709819/UK_Geoengineering_Position_Statement_.pdf …pic.twitter.com/5xG2V0dYeo

Here's what the UK govt statement says about SRM (solar radiation management): "The government is not deploying SRM, and has no plans to do so…[Deployment] would be likely to lead to 'winners' and 'losers', with some regions suffering detrimental impacts."pic.twitter.com/Mcy25INwBK

Key overarching principle in UK govt position is that cutting emissions remains top priority: "It is premature to consider geo-engineering as a viable option for addressing climate change. The priority is, and must be, to tackle the root cause by reducing emissions." #NegCO2pic.twitter.com/wtfRxasyH8

You can read more about UK govt-funded negative emissions research here: https://www.carbonbrief.org/uk-launches-world-first-research-programme-into-negative-emissions … And about SRM here: https://www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-six-ideas-to-limit-global-warming-with-solar-geoengineering …

For reference, here's the previous version of this UK govt statement of principles, which did not address negative emissions or SRM in any detail: https://web.archive.org/web/20160413135506/https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/308979/Government_s_view_on_geo-engineering_research.pdf …
