Incredible to remember, only 8yrs ago in 2010, when plans for a big new coal plant at Kingsnorth were shelved. Then the old plant closed in 2013. Now this…https://twitter.com/PAImages/status/976780184803299334 …

Of course, the just-demolished Kingsnorth tower was the site of the famous chimney-climbing @GreenpeaceUK protestors, who made it the epicentre of the fight over new UK coal. Remember them? https://www.theguardian.com/environment/cif-green/2009/oct/08/kingsnorth-climbdown-british-climate-movement … @benstewart999pic.twitter.com/V8LxB6W1H1

Kingsnorth was also supposed to be part of the CCS revolution that would clean up coal emissions. Yeah… that didn't go so well. NIce CGI image here though! http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121217172735/http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/11/ccs/chapter1-3/key-knowledge-reference-book.pdf …pic.twitter.com/SA3DdYvqRb

Still, it's a stark reminder of *just how long* the UK has been supposedly pushing ahead with CCS. Kingsnorth pulled out of the process when it ditched the coal plans in 2010…and we still don't have any UK CCS plants, nor plans to get them.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-11584004 …

Anyway, since then, UK coal use has absolutely collapsed. It's now at record lows, in data going back to the mid-1800s. No joke. https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-carbon-emissions-in-2017-fell-to-levels-last-seen-in-1890 …pic.twitter.com/SeNHYjCI71

Plus the UK has committed to phase out coal power by 2025. Only 7 plants remain and they're mostly not running much (there's been a big uptick during recent cold weather, due to gas being expensive). We're tracking the phaseout here: https://www.carbonbrief.org/countdown-to-2025-tracking-the-uk-coal-phase-out …pic.twitter.com/F9X77ieLHL

PS I'd love to see the projections that drove EOn's plans to invest in a new coal plant at Kingsnorth. Bet they were all sorts of wrong… …Ah yes: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download;jsessionid=03D62394259A849E7F5BC6E5BF98B776?doi=10.1.1.694.7002&rep=rep1&type=pdf …pic.twitter.com/jXH0I4yKPU
