The decline in UK new car sales is a stunning development – seems hard to argue it's all Covid Sales over the last 12m were 25% lower than the same period 2yrs ago (pre-pandemic) Petrol cars are down 50% in that period and diesels by a massive 75% – all while EVs climb vv fastpic.twitter.com/hkQu47DMDw
Here's another way to view the data, looking at average monthly sales over the past 12m You can see a big pandemic dip + recovery plus a broader, longer-term decline as well, esp for diesels But look at -48% in 2yrs for petrol! +More pure EVs sold in last 12m than dieselpic.twitter.com/nNj1KMI5ve
In 5yrs, conventional cars have gone from 96% of all new sales down to 48%. Wow. Oct 2021 was only their 2nd ever month below 50%. (Also interesting to see plug-in cars outselling hybrids).pic.twitter.com/nvdVq2ldTQ
Note to finish: I've been compiling this data from monthly @SMMT figures, latest at the link
It's a pity the data is presented as an image of a table so they have to be entered manually
How about a downloadable CSV…?
Even an html table would be nice!https://www.smmt.co.uk/2021/12/battery-ev-uptake-doubles-but-new-car-market-remains-well-adrift-of-pre-pandemic-levels/ …
(Before anyone asks, yes, switching to EVs will dramatically cut CO2 emissions from UK road transport – but there are of course greener alternatives to driving)https://twitter.com/DrSimEvans/status/1226879877175029760 …
Simon, do you have similar data for city public transport buses?
No, sorry
Simon, any idea what caused the BEV spike in early 2020?
The chart shows share of sales and there was a massive dip overall that month due to Covid, whereas I suspect a lot of EV sales were on pre-order waiting for delivery (It was actually less a dip than a smaller April bump than usual, but hopefully you get the point)pic.twitter.com/JfRkXSuTbB
