Some notes: 1/ Xi also pledged to raise China's NDC, which aims to peak emissions by 2030 at the latest 2/ "carbon neutrality" is ambiguous and might only refer to CO2 rather than all GHGs. Anyone know?

Beware green activists promoting the habitual propaganda by China's communist leaders. Here's the key test: Will China agree to sign up to legally binding targets
@COP26? -
Will USA?

After EU-China meetings, there was already some noise about this, but now it seems much more solid. If China backs this up with strong actions in the next Five-Years Plan, it will be a true game changer for climate and energy policy.https://twitter.com/anunezjimenez/status/1305559560204189698?s=20 …

Serious question (and saddens me that attack mode has to be assumed on Twitter and hence that throat-clearing is needed but oh well). Why is it huge though? The 2030 part simply re-states the existing NDC, and 2060 targets are...very far away and uncertain.

Partly it is the signalling that this is an important issue for Xi and something he wants to talk about on world stage. But on specifics he also pledged to raise NDC. And even talking about net-zero (whether CO2 or GHG) in the context of a specific date seems really significant.

If you take the lifetime of a coal plant as 40 years, that should mean no new coal plants from now - unless CCS retrofitted or early closure (i.e. stranded asset). Not much different for gas. That would also surely make emissions peak before 2030... so some wiggle room...

So, likely, mere unsupported CCP propaganda or at best, aspirational. https://twitter.com/monfera/status/1296049914523328513 … According to NPR China is in the process of building hundreds of coal plants abroad and https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-will-china-build-hundreds-of-new-coal-plants-in-the-2020s … 'coal-power capacity “will” reach 1,300GW by 2030, up from 1,050GW today'
