Our EV factcheck has been updated again: Q) Surely making batteries for EVs causes much higher emissions than building a std car? A) Yes, but the extra carbon "debt" gets paid off within 2yrs due to much lower use-phase emissions https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-how-electric-vehicles-help-to-tackle-climate-change …pic.twitter.com/waKUyWHIuR

More EV factcheck updates: Q) Should I keep driving my old car rather than buying a new EV? A) Up to you, but the carbon debt of the new EV will be paid off after ~4yrs and after that you're cutting emissions https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-how-electric-vehicles-help-to-tackle-climate-change …pic.twitter.com/hMRg2quMKL

Again, have used the article to start a good debate on my facebook with mates all over the place to whether they should replace or not, and what are the tipping points. Really, really useful. Food for thought for myself too. I need to do more.

correct, the charts are based on a 40kWh battery easy to amend for a larger one but the picture is more or less the same (it's basically an extra couple of years to pay off the carbon debt in the UK)pic.twitter.com/PhlBB0kdvN

Aye, but if you're driving a very high mpg car and only averaging a few thousand km per year, then the current 177gCO/kWh costs over that period may not look quite so good, esp when you take into account the probable reduction in embodied production cost in say 4 years time.

Yes, very low mileage drivers would take longer to pay off the initial carbon debt of a new EV. Perhaps said driver should get rid of their car and hire or taxi when needed?

Unless your old car is being scrapped before its end of life, you don't cause any new emissions by buying an EV. You are just letting someone else "use up" your gas car.

Well, only if you scrap the old vehicle. Otherwise it's still driving around somewhere. BTW, what yearly mileage is assumed?
