  4. Shift your frame from “I hope I get in somewhere!” to “what is the best place for me?” If you feel like you’d be lucky to get an offer from anywhere, you will be more likely to overlook red flags. Even if it takes longer, it’s worth the wait to find the right match. 12/x

  5. Weigh culture and environment as much as you weigh other things like training program, match to your interests, etc. It will be the single greater predictor of your quality of life. 11/x

  6. Your prospective adviser is on best behavior at the interview. If your gut picks up a negative vibe of any kind---listen to it. Keep a journal of feelings or incidents that arose on interview day, update it right after you leave while your immediate reaction is still fresh. 10/x

  7. Don't be more forgiving of red flags at fancy pants high prestige programs. I once had a mean interviewer at a high prestige school but still ranked them high bc well, high prestige. They didn’t accept me but years later almost every grad I met from there had tales of abuse. 9/x

  8. Ask your current mentor about the reputation of a prospective adviser and grad program. If they aren’t sure, ask them to tap their networks to find out. 8/x

  9. Note the diversity in the department (yes, even you, white people!). Ask them about their approach to diversity and inclusion. Lack of diversity in faculty and student body and/or a weak D&I philosophy speaks volumes about culture in general. Red flag. 7/x

  10. Related, is there high turnover in lab staff? Get a sense of how steady the operation is. Ask lab staff what it is like to work there. Get in touch with former lab staff too. 6/x

  11. Ask students if students have left the lab and if so why. It’s not instantly a red flag if a student has left, however multiple students leaving a lab is unusual, especially if the reasons are unclear. Red flag. 5/x

  12. Also, do the students seem like people you want to hang out with? Does there appear to be tension or competitiveness among them? This could be a sign they’re trying to survive an “eat or be eaten,” back biting culture. Red flag. 4/x

  13. If students live in a culture of fear they may not be 100% forthcoming so it is just as important to listen to what they say as it is what they do NOT say. If you ask about stress and they pivot to how much they are learning. Red flag. 3/x

  14. Current and former students are the best source of information on life in the lab and dept. Talk to as many as you possibly can. Ask about mentorship style, work/life balance, stress, and expectations. Ask what they like best and least about their mentor. 2/x

  15. It’s grad school interview season and if we’ve learned nothing from it's that abusive environments can spoil one’s passion for science. Fellow profs, let’s give our best advice on how students can sniff out those environments on interview day. A thread! 1/x
