I was not familiar with the term but my gosh I experience this a lot and many of you/my scientist colleagues do as well. My discussion @ForbesScience of that "sealioning" is. #YouAreWelcomehttps://www.forbes.com/sites/marshallshepherd/2019/03/07/sealioning-is-a-common-trolling-tactic-on-social-media-what-is-it/#5f3ae39e7a41 …

It would be interesting to find a way to objectively study how good we are at identifying people who have nefarious purposes in posing questions, versus those who might think they honestly have a long list of questions they C as legit.

From my own personal experience, there are ways. Discernment and common sense are useful in detecting it

Have the atmosphere and weather science communities started using the helpful #9replyGuys sorting mechanism? The sealion is type #6!https://twitter.com/sbarolo/status/1036685010869407744 …

#WomeninSTEM get a lot of “Reply Guys” who repeat the same unhelpful comments. @shrewshrew and I (a woman & a man in science) have attempted to catalog those replies, to save us all the trouble of writing new responses every time. presenting THE NINE TYPES OF REPLY GUYS (1/n) pic.twitter.com/0ewNRJloLu

The @9replyguys has its own twitter handle. The collection is even arranged by systemic framework, a periodic table of trolls, sort of.

I’ve taken to often asking uncomfortable questions in DM if I can because asking them in public inevitably results in harpooning by trolls who think I’m lacking sincerity. There is always a problem when looking to motives. The sincere get ruined.

Nice find. Haven't heard this one before, but having recently seen a whole bunch of sealions, its a really great characterization.
