Wear your N95s today, Wisconsin friends. If you’re in Madison and need a respirator, please see this thread of free masks available around town, organized by twitter.com/drsamischalk/s

Madison's air quality is the worst it's been in decades, reaching "very unhealthy" levels in parts of the city. The AQI was 274 this morning, according to the EPA.
Everyone should avoid physical activity outdoors, and vulnerable groups should stay indoors as much as possible.

If you live in Vancouver and want a really solid example of this kind of organizing, to drop them some cash, or to get involved, check out . They’re amazing. (Also s/o to Dr. Schalk for being such a stellar human.)

If you want to distribute masks in your community here’s what I did:
-Purchased a base supply of masks with my money plus initial donations
-Asked for more mask & money donations
-Contacted local businesses & non-profits to ask if they would be a pickup site

This is a wonderful idea. Totally mulling over how I can do something similar here.

That’s it! Anyone can do this at any scale. If you get 1 high risk person a high quality mask they didn’t have before, that is a success! We keep us safe!

Also: this took about 4 hours of my day yesterday plus half a tank of gas. I am pretty plugged into my local community which helps but I got help from new folks I have never met before. That’s how community organizing grows, by finding new connections with everything you do.

The number of anti-maskers in the replies of some of these tweets about the air quality is wild. Like, babes, you can literally look outside & see it’s bad but you still think people are trying to dupe you into masking? Go ahead & choke out there then. Enjoy.

Yesterday was the highest PM2.5 concentration recorded at either of the two Madison-area air quality monitoring sites since 1999. Unfortunately, it might be worse right now than yesterday. Mask up if you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time.

If you go outside, doctors say wearing an N95 mask is the best option.

The MMSD will be closed today, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, due to worsening outdoor air quality from Canadian wildfire smoke. This means: There are no MMSD summer semester classes; virtual programming is also canceled. MMSD athletic practices and all MSCR programming is canceled.

I wore a mask & a bonnet to water my balcony plants this morning and my eyes were still itchy once I came back inside. This air quality is no joke. Please stay inside if you can, Wisconsin, and wear a mask outside if you have to go out.

Numbers are worse today than yesterday. We are nearly in the “hazardous” air quality level & are ranked among some of the worst air quality in the world right now. Where are the safe shelter spaces for folks without places to stay?!

This is how disablement works along lines of class. If you have a home, car, the ability to buy masks & air filters, you’ll be fine. If not, you risk illness & disability that will be uncared for by our failed healthcare system. Climate crisis is a disability justice issue!

It’s hard to miss – a blanket of wildfire smoke has settled in across Dane Co. and it’s making the air quality unhealthy for all of us.

It’s fiscally irresponsible and morally reprehensible to defund important services in our communities in order to fund the wealthy few. The people of Wisconsin deserve better than this.

PSA: If you’re wearing a mask outside in Madison right now because of the smoke, opt for a N-95 or paper mask of some kind.
According to the @WDNR, cloth masks aren’t as good at filtering out smoke particles.
