Well, it looks like the baby racers (Coluber constrictor) are starting to hatch in the southeastern United States. They can be hard to recognize because they don't look like the adults. This is a baby racer. Look at those big eyes.

my most favorite memory from an outreach event w 3rd grade kids in DC: showing them a gregarious box turtle, neck stretched out. Suddenly it was startled, pulled its head in. one kid says “haha looks like it’s wearing a turtlenec—<eyes widen in realization>OOOooohhhh!” 💚

New eDNA paper out - didn't find Ophidiomyces fungus (the one that causes SFD), and only a couple massasauga positives. Concludion: eDNA may not be useful for detecting massasaugas or the fungus!

The next installment in my "It's Hard to Be a Turtle" series. Once again, I feel bad for laughing but turtles are just fun to watch.

The goal is to figure out how turtles exist in heavily modified urban and suburban landscapes, with a focus on threatened species. For us that’s Blanding’s and Box turtles.

This has been a pretty good week for snake surveys but an even better week for stumbling upon some of Michigan’s coolest turtle species!
