Hey , so I was scoping a dog walk, and came across these polygonal-crack(?)-like features... The link seems to be the Northampton Sand Formation, which is described as having a 'box stone structure'. Anyone know what they are? And what controls shape/spacing?

Hi , does anyone know of any good cross sections of (preferably large disp.) faults in the Columbia River Basalts? Some good candidates in Oregon in the Northern Nevada Rift, but skeptical about exposure...

Hi , quick question: is it ok to contact Journal editors before a submission?... want to check the paper is appropriate to the journal before writing/formatting to their style/length. Any advice welcomed!

I don't have any answers. I would however like to see actual data. Perhaps something for the to lead in the UK; subgroups should provide a forum to discuss also: e.g. could use their 50-year anniversary meeting to promote/discuss the future of geosci? 6/6

Arguably, if every UK uni was producing >100 geology UG students each cohort, that is itself unsustainable; are the 'target' jobs are so numerous? And with fluctuations in e.g. O&G, has the job market been flooded with qualified people? 5/6

Or it may be a perfect storm of these points, and others. For perspective (another anecdote), my UG cohort was ~40 students; pretty standard back then for the dept. Since, classes swelled to >100, and back down to 40-50... this is 1/31(?) UK uni's offering geosci courses. 4/6

I don't disagree that perception of the subject may be the cause. In which case the problem should be global, and the study needs to reflect this. There are other possibilities (reduction in the number of available jobs, or perception that geology is an outdoor job). 3/6

Both articles have made identical points that the perception of Geology is one of a dirty subject. That may be the case, but I have yet to see any data in support; it currently seems anecdotal and what we need now is a study to find the underlying cause of decline. 2/6

A big thanks to the organisers on what is probably to be my last TSG meeting for the foreseeable future. Been great to meet old and new friends, and have really appreciated the opportunity to discuss emerging ideas on a range of cutting-edge science.

Awesome progress, in a very short amount of time, from on her fellowship project, building anisotropic poroelastic models with evolving damage. Watch this space folks!
