Mr. Ellis turned himself in after missing a court date on a DUI charge. Video shows him looking healthy & fit when he enters the jail. He was placed in general population, and then his health started to deteriorate. He could not get out of bed for 8 days. Jail staff did nothing.

That's when "other inmates 'started raising ... hell' to get [him] medical help" according to Michael Harrington, who was incarcerated with Mr. Ellis. Paramedics were called, but jail staff told them they thought Mr. Ellis was faking. They transferred him to an isolation cell.

When jail staff did finally check on Mr. Ellis, they found him cold and unresponsive. They called paramedics. They also, the video shows, ordered other incarcerated people to clean the mat he had been sleeping on, which was soaked in urine, and his cell.

Mr. Ellis was pronounced dead at the hospital. The medical examiner later determined he died of septic shock. When he was taken to the hospital, Mr. Ellis had a bed sheet tied loosely around his neck, but his autopsy showed he had no injuries to his neck.

In the video, after the paramedics leave, you can hear the jail nurse suggest that Mr. Ellis died by suicide. In court records, lawyers for Ellis’ family have said they believe jail staff were trying to stage the scene to make it look as though Mr. Ellis killed himself.
