This happened in the city of Hawthorne, which was a sundown town until the middle of the twentieth century.

Thinking about all of this, it hits me that what while what Skye did is remarkable, and it's incredible that she happened to be there at that exact same time, it's not incredible at all that she lived through a horribly similar experience with her boyfriend.

Let me just address this "fits the description" bullshit I see people are mentioning in the comments. In my work as a public defender, I can tell you, this is the MOST COMMON pretext police use to stop and search Black people. It is harassment.

The descriptions police use are so vague as to be meaningless, such as "young Black male in gray hoodie." I would not be surprised if the description here were "Black man in black pants." I am really not kidding you when I say they are that general.

Black people are always treated as suspects. William says I am William not a suspect. His name is William. But police seem him as a suspect. He has no doubt been stopped many many times before. Maybe it hasn't reached this level, maybe it has. He lives this every day.

It should not be on Skye to get the police to see William as a human being. Although maybe I am giving them too much credit to think that is even what is happening here. It's probably just the camera.

That was terrifying to watch. It seems like those officers had very little regard for bystanders beyond this man too. The rifle is pointed straight at the woman filming for a moment.
