Many PhD students think their project has to be their magnum opus, a masterpiece which will be the best research they ever do. In fact, a PhD is training, to give you the tools for a future research career. Supervisors would do well to remember this too!

What a difference a week makes. Turns out my "regular" ID patients with actual infections are far more interesting and challenging than lots of well people who don't have the novel .

I worked on meningitis in Zambia in 2012 and lumbar puncture stigma was a huge problem...a very difficult problem to crack. I wonder if this is a problem elsewhere.

Those with ‘biblical leprosy’ were banished from the empire. Some were looked after by monks. Fossilised remains show changes consistent with psoriasis not leprosy. Leprosy is curable with little risk of person to person spread. Help end stigma!

Chest xrays, like ECGs, can be difficult to interpret. Medics for some reason bend over backwards to pretend to each other that they are easy when they are not. This beautifully clear "xray atlas" is very helpful!I wish I had seen this as a medical student..

Infectious diseases are so intertwined with history. Leprosy, plague, tuberculosis, malaria to name a few have such deep historical and cultural connotations
