In October I asked Twitter this question. The eye-watering replies made me want to make a doc on the subject. It goes out tonight on @BBCRadio4. It's called PE: A History of Violence and it's for everyone who got picked last. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0002g6z …https://twitter.com/DrMatthewSweet/status/1048114136868118529 …

Why is/was PE the only subject in which humiliation was considered part of the learning process? In my school Mr Mulkerrin made us line up, take our tops off, and he walked down the line announcing whether or not we had soft bellies or the flat muscular ones he preferred. https://twitter.com/EMcG67/status/1048112095617794048 …

Quite - I used to get picked to come last for the entertainment of others in the 100m every damn year in (compulsory) sports day. Me & Kevin Rathburn as I recall.

One PE teacher at the start of a swimming lesson told us to hurry up getting changed and the last person in the pool would have to do laps. 5 minutes later, there was a fire drill so we all had to stand freezing and wet in the playground. Staff knew about fire drills in advance.

Maybe it created observers and critics of us? Is it better to be in a gang or outside recording and understanding it?

PE teachers who pick the same two people to be team captains every week, and let them pick their friends first for the team...so you are always, always picked last. Did teachers not notice this was cruel & unfair?

Mine once chose me because I was usually last to be picked. I was usually last because of a total lack of interest, so I just picked one of the usual captains first and let him choose the rest of the team.

Matthew you should read the brilliantly funny Louie Knight novels by Malcolm Pryce @exogamist There's a VERY villainous PE teacher!
