Lydia Datt studied at the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women, 1895-1897. Yesterday while
#mudlarking on the Thames Foreshore I found this tiny yellow glass bead with a sad & dark history. This is a ‘striped melon’, so called because of the colour & red/green stripes. Made in 18th C Venice or Bohemia & known as a slave trade bead.pic.twitter.com/6C8gsNHt2E

I’m about to teach class on Site Formation processes. It’s core to everything we do as archaeologists and yet I struggle to find it in text books. I’m taking best examples from papers instead.

Slightly later, and not a student, but this is a 1937 instance of an Edinburgh hotel enforcing a 'colour bar' (and justifying it on the basis of the prejedices of 'American tourists')https://twitter.com/Anna_Girling/status/991732812788224000 …

In 1927 and again in 1931 “colour bars” against African and Asian students were repeatedly introduced by cafes, bars and restaurants in Edinburgh. These racist bans were widely condemned in South African, Indian, Tanzanian and British newspapers.https://twitter.com/carissa_chew/status/1215375770736111621 …
