(1/3) The Hereford Cathedral Library in Hereford, England is the largest surviving chained library with its chains, rods and locks intact. In earlier periods, books were often chained to the shelves to safeguard them from potential thieves.pic.twitter.com/Vgjohkl5V6

(2/3) The chains were fitted to the cover of the books via ringlets, and were long enough to allow the books to be taken from their shelves and read, but not removed from the library itself. Only the librarian could remove the books from the chain using a key.pic.twitter.com/G8D7Lo8Ggr

(3/3) The books were typically shelved with their foredges facing the reader, rather than their spines. This may seem like the wrong way, but it allowed the books to be lifted down and opened without needing to be turned around, thus avoiding tangling the chain.pic.twitter.com/gLvfuUC85f

Wow! I wish I can visit this library one day. It reminds me of the Citadel in Game of Thrones.

It is way smaller but otherwise yes. I visited Hereford years ago (before GOT) and when watching the series the Citadel reminded me of the Hereford library.

I've been there. It blew my mind. The age when books and knowledge were considered priceless. How far we have come from this reverence for knowledge.

It is an amazing library, housed in a beautiful cathedral, albeit one of the smaller English cathedrals. A visit just to the library is worth going to Hereford.
