There's a pervasive narrative that kids aren't at risk from #covid19, and that with declining infection rates, authorizing vaccines for younger children is no longer a priority. As a mom of 2 young kids, I strongly disagree. Here's why: 🧵@PostOpinionshttps://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/06/15/why-we-need-vaccinate-young-children-too/ …

A key fallacy is comparing the severity of children’s illness to adults'. It shouldn’t matter if adults are at greater risk if the illness among kids is itself a problem. Indeed, #covid19 is now a leading cause of death in children. And long-haul covid also exists for kids. /2

Also, we don't know what will happen in the fall, with the threat of more contagious & deadlier variants. Schools should open 100% in-person, but we shouldn't be so quick to rid of mitigation measures like masking & testing (& we should consider requiring vaccinations). /3

And let’s remember why we vaccinate — to both protect the individual and to quell the disease in the community. Vaccination is, by definition, about prevention. There hasn’t been a case of polio in the US since the 1970s, yet kids get the polio vaccine to prevent resurgence. /4

Different families have different perceptions of risk. For our family, it comes down to this: If you have the option to reduce a low risk of something awful happening to your kids to essentially zero, would you take it? I would, and I bet that many parents would too. /END

Can you cite the evidence that Covid 19 is a leading cause of death in children?

I’m sorry, did something change that only you are privy too? How about this: Appreciate the blessing that this is not a terrible pediatric disease. And instead of freaking out millions of parents needlessly, try writing in a private diary and getting some therapy.

There are 73 million children ages 18 and under in the United States. Fewer than 600 have died from Covid.
