    BREAKING: White House says FDA Chief must authorize the vaccine or resign. This is truly the worst thing can do right now. It will erode public confidence if there is suspicion of political interference with scientific approval.

    What about pregnant women? They were not included in the trials & there isn’t enough info on safety. But it’s also not right to exclude all pregnant & breastfeeding people from the benefits of vaccine. I reference ’s nuanced position here.

    There has been some great news on vaccine trials but this kind of ends that streak. Sanofi runs into a problem that sets back one of the world’s largest vaccine producers — and every country that hoped to buy from them.

    It’s important to know what the Pfizer vaccine does & doesn’t do. It works to prevent symptomatic & severe disease. We don’t yet know whether it reduces transmission. Those who get vaccinated still need to wear masks + physical distance to prevent infecting others

    Speaking with shortly: It’s incredible that we could be hours away from the FDA authorization of the first vaccine that appears safe & very efficacious (95%!). Let’s not forget that vaccines will not get us through this very deadly winter ahead.

    Let me clarify: This external committee can only recommend a decision to the FDA. FDA itself now needs to make their decision based on this recommendation (which we expect will come in short order).

    BREAKING: FDA external committee just voted to grant emergency use authorization for Pfizer vaccine: 17 yes-4 no-1 abstain ("no"s primarily because some thought 16- & 17-year old should not be in the initial EUA).

    Very interesting / poll & analysis by . I'm particularly concerned about people's assessment of risk. Indoor gatherings with extended family/friends are very high risk. This should not be happening with surging .

    It’s great that the FDA expert panel has a public meeting to deliberate vaccine. I expect authorization to come shortly & will be listening for recommendations for specific groups, including pregnancy women (there are 333,000 pregnant/postpartum healthcare workers)

    Speaking with this hour about FDA advisory panel vaccine deliberations. It’s terrific that they are public & data are made available for all to see. Transparency is key to trust. This process is an extra safeguard for decisions to be based on science.

    FDA external advisory will almost certainly vote yes for EUA for vaccine. Qs: -Which groups they will NOT recommend at this time but will not exclude (ie pregnant people) -Which groups they will warn against (people w severe allergic reactions, immune compromise)

    Joining now to answer Qs on & vaccines. This is a monumental day as the Pfizer vaccine could well receive authorization shortly. It's a marvel of science that we are here--though we must keep masking/distancing to save lives this winter.

    Just saw this report by . If confirmed, it is truly awful. There will always be politics involved in policy-making, but it should not dictate what is scientifically sound. Politicians should never be allowed to suppress science.
