There's a special event hidden inside the internal data of Pokemon Generations 4 and 5: the Lock Capsule Event. This event was never recorded -- until this recent YouTube video: It shows the entire event, as well as how you can play it yourself in 2020.

  2. The Original Sigilyph: According to Ken Sugimori, Sigilyph's original design was SO bizarre, the designers had to meet "many times" in order to tone it down and make him look like an actual Pokemon. Link to full interview about Gen 5 Pokemon development:

  4. (2/3) Like many lost Gen 1 Pokemon, all we know is the information contained in the 2018 Satoshi manga, and what was contained in the Gen 1 beta assets leaked and published by in Feb 2019. This information included Barunda's name, appearance, and index number (50).

  6. All Alola Meadows & Oricorio Styles Four pages of official artwork from the "Ultra Sun & Moon Alola Art Book." I tweeted about this 253 page art book yesterday -- tragically, the book can only be purchased in Japan, and has never been translated.

  7. Sigilyph Origins: Sigilyph is based on the Nazca Lines -- massive geoglyphs formed in Peru between 500BC and 500AD. Nazca lines are best viewed from high above, and can measure 1000+ meters long. Many believe the Nazca people created these lines to be seen by gods in the sky.

  8. Pokemon Clones Incoming: I recently tweeted about some clone variants from Mewtwo Strikes Back who never appeared in the games. Well, to celebrate Red & Green's 23rd anniversary, they just announced clones are coming to Pokemon GO. Reported by Eurogamer:

  9. Beta Quagsire: In Gold & Silver's 1997 demo, Quagsire was originally an unevolved pure Water-type. But Quagsire ended up getting revised to Water/Ground, and given Wooper as a pre-evolution. 1. Demo sprite recreation by 2. G&S 1997 demo sprite 3. 1999's final design

3 Pokemon's Unique Origin: In 1997, lead PKMN designer Ken Sugimori made some original artwork for a Japanese magazine, making it clear these 3 creatures were NOT Pokemon. But they later got sucked up into the Pokemon world anyway. Read the full story:

(3/4) The photo attached to this tweet is Bomushikā's learnset in Gold & Silver's 1997 demo. Naturally learning attacks like Flame Wheel and Hydro Pump, Bomushikā likely would have been quite a popular Pokemon... if he'd made it into Gold & Silver's final build.

(2/4) Bomushikā translates to "bomb sea lion," so he's sometimes referred to by his unofficial English name "Bombseal." After Bomushikā was scrapped from Gen 2, the series didn't get a Water/Fire Pokemon until Volcanion in Gen 6 (who's actually classified as Fire/Water type).

Lost Pokemon of the Day: Bomushikā First revealed when Gold & Silver's 1997 demo leaked in 2018, Bomushikā was a sea lion Pokemon, and if he'd made the final cut, would have been the series' first Water/Fire type. (Photo descriptions & more info continued in thread below) (1/4)

Pokemon: Only in Japan Sold exclusively in Japan, the Alola Art Book contains development artwork for every Pokemon, character, and location added in Gen 7 -- totaling 253 pages of beautiful Alola artwork. Frankly, the fact it's only available in Japan is an absolute travesty.

How a Pokemon Gets Made: Many Pokemon are based on briefs from Game Freak's planners. The planners request Pokemon of a certain elemental type, or that fit a particular environment, etc. Then the design team pitches Pokemon ideas to the art director based on those requirements.

Beta Igglybuff: In Gold & SIlver's 1997 demo, Igglybuff evolved into Jigglypuff at level 12. But his design was later revised for G&S's final build, and changed to evolve via high friendship. 1. Demo sprite recreation by 2. G&S 1997 demo sprite 3. 1999's final design

Pokemon Tretta: These arcade machines allow 1 or 2 players to search for, catch, and battle Pokemon in 3-on-3 battles. When you catch a Pokemon, you gets its token -- then you can use that Pokemon every time you play Tretta in the future. Sadly, Tretta can only be found in Asia.

Frillish's Development: New Pokemon designer Mana Ibe originally created Frillish as sweet little cuties. But Gen 5 was short on Ghost types, so Mana was forced to revise them into creepers... much to her dismay 😥 Full interview on Pokemon development:
