After presenting about person-first language, avoiding words like “addict” “abuse” “clean/dirty,” I was asked by a doctor what to do if someone - family member, friend, or a patient- asks to be referred to as an “addict” or a “junkie.” 1/x

Thank you!!! As an SUD counselor I cringe whenever I hear the term addict. I ask if it serves the participant well and start a discussion about stigma. I can’t wait to share this document, esp w/journalists!

This is interesting because a large part of management of pts w/ AUD/OUD is referral to peer support groups, i.e. AA, NA. Part of these orgs’ approach is ‘self-actualization’ by introductory statements along the lines of “I’m ___ and I am an alcoholic/addict”
