2022 has been a remarkable year for public health, and while there is still much work to be done, I’m proud of what we have achieved with our partners and look forward to what we will accomplish next year.
calls on:
-governments to urgently implement best practice policy for the elimination
-food industry to replace trans fat with healthier fats & oils
-civil society organizations to advocate for the elimination of trans fat
To eliminate #transfat, WHO recommends countries to
limit industrially produced trans fat to 2 grams/100 grams of total fat in all foods
or
ban the production/use of partially hydrogenated oils as an ingredient in all foods.

The CDC has a critical role to play in preventing both infectious diseases and #NCDs. These underlying conditions can increase the risk of serious complications from infectious diseases and need to be addressed as a matter of urgency, to stop preventable deaths and save lives.
Tobacco control, tracking and preventing drug overdose, response to suicide trends and clusters, water and other environmental contaminants that cause cancer and other problems, heart health, traffic safety and other important CDC programs protect Americans and save lives. 3/
Maternal mortality is unacceptably high in states with abortion bans or restrictions in the U.S. and weighs heaviest on women of color. Native American mortality rates were 4.5X higher and Black women's rates were 2.6X the rate of white women.
“The time is always right to do what’s right.” There’s no better way to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy than to follow his wisdom - and no shortage of opportunities for all of us to put it to use, today and every day.
The unprecedented increase in overdose deaths underscores the need to support the expansion of evidence-based treatment services. We must do more to save lives and end the overdose epidemic. https://on.nyc.gov/3k9gsAJ
It is shameful to see tobacco companies continuing to prey on youth. The passage of Prop 31 in California was a big step toward saving lives from preventable deaths, however, the introduction of products like these seeks to undermine progress.
The link between exercise and a healthy heart cannot be understated. Every step counts towards ensuring healthier lives and preventing chronic conditions.
While this is a step in the right direction, we must do more to ensure that our roads are safe for all users. This means upholding road safety laws that are designed to keep people safe.
NHTSA estimates for first nine months of 2022 suggest roadway fatalities beginning to level off after two years of dramatic increases: https://nhtsa.gov/press-releases/nhtsa-estimates-traffic-deaths-2022-third-quarter…

More than 15% of the US population had a substance use disorder in 2021 and nearly 94% of those people didn’t receive any treatment. Our policymakers must address this by expanding access to treatment to flatten the curve on overdose deaths.
, the Gov. of Tanzania increased access to maternal healthcare in the Kigoma Region. The results were clear: institutional maternal mortality dropped by 43%, stillbirth rate dropped by 52% & deliveries in the healthcare facility increased by 74%.
In 2006, Tanzania ranked number 6 in the world in terms of maternal mortality. Learn about how we partnered with the Government of Tanzania to increase access to emergency obstetric & reproductive care in the Kigmoa Region on the #FollowtheData podcast: https://bloombg.org/3IcYo2w
As we all look to make 2023 a better and healthier year, incorporating healthy diets and lifestyles into our routines can help control or avert chronic conditions such as hypertension and other #NCDs.
surveyed people in Colombia, India, Jordan, Tanzania & the US on attitudes & perceptions about #NCDs. The survey found 66% of adults have had an #NCD or know someone who has. Despite this, many underestimate their harm. http://bit.ly/3Wj5FS
Today, approx. half of all deaths in the world go unrecorded; accordingly, health policy decisions are often based on inadequate information. Having accurate public health data and using that data for policymaking is key to improving quality of life.
Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases & Injuries came at a critical juncture for public health and will continue to motivate global collaboration to reduce the #NCD burden. http://prn.to/3HFaW2r
As we look back on what we've accomplished this year & the progress we're committed to making, we’re introducing a new interview series with our program & initiative leads.

Increasing access to equitable reproductive health services can help prevent countless maternal and newborn deaths. We have to do the work to make sure that every mother and child has access to the care they need to be healthy.
The overdose epidemic is one of the worst public health crises facing our country. Overdose harm reduction strategies should be employed immediately across the country to save lives.
More than 107,000 people died in the United States last year by overdosing on illegal drugs.
That is the country’s highest figure ever. Two-thirds of the deaths were attributed to fentanyl.

While the possible flattening of overdose deaths is welcome news, overdoses are still 50% higher than 5 years ago, devastating communities around the country. Increasing access to naloxone will help ensure a continued downward trajectory of overdose deaths
With millions of deaths each year attributable to diet-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, we need to promote policies to address the climate, food, and health nexus to ensure healthier diets and access to nutritious foods.
800+ million people are affected by hunger caused by conflicts & economic shocks, compounded by #ClimateChange. The hardest hit are children, pregnant & breastfeeding women. Sustainable food systems & #ClimateAction are key for ending hunger & creating a healthier for all.
With ~10 million deaths caused by cancer worldwide in 2020, countries need accurate and timely cancer data to better address populations' needs. New Collaborating Centers in Kenya, South Africa, & Côte d'Ivoire support this need. Learn more: http://bit.ly/3HxX8XG#Data4Health
The #AmericanHealthSummit was an opportunity to collaborate with and learn from colleagues across the public health sector. In my December newsletter I touch on key moments from the summit and how we can continue positive momentum in the new year. http://bit.ly/3FT0d3e
Breaking News: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to block a California law banning flavored tobacco, clearing the way for the state's ban to take effect next week.
“Evidence shows that people with opioid use disorder who are engaged in addiction treatment with medications such as methadone are much less likely to die than those who are not being treated.”
We must promote better access to these lifesaving treatments.
and Rhea Goswami during the #AmericanHealthSummit was an inspiration to the public health community. They exemplify the mentorship necessary to bridge educational gaps and create unique solutions across generations.
Amidst the conversation around diet and the food system, @TTurnDietician encouraged us to think of ourselves as policymakers. “[We must] focus on shifting the mindset because the mindset is what causes people to vote the way they vote.” #AmericanHealthSummit
A few takeaways from the session on reducing gun violence:
👉 Those most impacted by gun violence should be invited to be part of the solution
👉 Having champions on the ground and robust infrastructure to implement makes a difference #AmericanHealthSummit
