✨Professional news!✨ After 2 wonderful years, I'm leaving my job at the Bernard & Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust. I'm thrilled to share that I'll be joining as a Program Officer for the Environment, where I'll oversee grantmaking on US climate. I am so excited!

What will get people to eat less beef? A recession will, but the "eat less beef" climate messaging apparently won't. Thanks to for up-to-the-minute demand tracking.

We have already emitted a lot of carbon, so the remaining carbon budget for: • 1.5°C is tiny (it is as good as gone) • 2°C is tight (2.5x larger than 1.5°C) • >4°C is huge, 2x more than the CO₂ emitted historically 7/

Good point from Danny Cullenward, who points out that we can't go negative without fully decarbonizing (this is one reason. the biomass -> hydrogen pathway is interesting - you get a zero-carbon fuel in addition to removal of CO2 from the atmosphere).

. agreed with the broad conclusions, saying: “Carbon neutrality is achievable and we want to start now.” But that doesn't mean it'll be easy to actually implement here:

I spent a good chunk of my phd training carefully studying differences between prediction and projection, exploratory and consolidative modeling, &.c, including in the context of climate, and WOW is this conversation (sometimes intentionally) muddled in the Real World™

I agree that its worthwhile changing focus from RCP8.5 towards a more realistic BAU case. However, there's a lot of momentum in the system. The core of the AR6 runs and the various MIPs are based on RCP8.5. This means that any transition away from RCP8.5 would take years.

Adding that the opportunities & challenges are as much socio as technical. Look at geographical distribution of opportunities & where value is located. Consider labor, pollution, & building infrastructure at scale. We need to approach this in an interdisciplinary way, early (now)

4/8 80% of the CO2 Removal options California require CCS. California won’t hit its net-zero targets without enormous CO2 storage in deep saline formations, both from biomass & direct air capture (DAC)

This is an incredible piece of work. Grateful to (especially ) and for enabling it, and the brilliant researchers who did the work to identify opportunities to take CO2 from the air with biowaste, tech, and forests in CA to reduce climate risk.

Taking CO2 out of the air with trees, biowaste, and tech can make CA safer from fires, healthier, and more prosperous with in-state jobs.

“But innovation alone isn’t enough. We must clarify what federal law will (and will not) require, to provide a stable and predictable policy framework for investors and electric utilities in the decades ahead.”
