Regrettably this has been coming. More bad news for the climate strategy..

Wow! Or maybe, what's new. Now around two hours between York, Leeds and Machester due to cancellations. Not a viable work option anymore. I feel even more for the folks in Redcar and Saltburn. Do you remember trains?

But if that was the case then, if it were me, I'd release the data and dismiss this as a non-issue.

If I am wrong (and many others who have done the maths ) and we can carry on planning for and encouraging car traffic like we used to before the carbon targets then I'll get back in my box.

Please share this. We need transparency in our decarbonisation policies. Every year £billions of tax funding get spent on the transport system. We have to spend them on the right things

Listening to a set of summaries of some of the amazing Seedcorn projects which we funded through - thoroughly inspiring and underlines the importance of local design and ownership working together with national policy frameworks. Well done to for coordinating

Hi all. If the twitter ship does sink you'll be able to find me on linkedin. Less funny as a platform, overpopulated with images of people at an event, but good content discussed in a fair and friendly manner.

New study compares riding e-bikes and pedal bikes. Findings:
🔷 An e-bike requires 13% less energy
🔷 Both the e-bike and pedal bike provide "moderate intensity physical activity"
🔷 Most people prefer the e-bike

This is VERY interesting — imagine if every decision-maker in YOUR city, elected or appointed, was required to experience just a small taste of what it’s like to be a bike-rider on badly designed, unsafe (aka typical) roads?

The buses have moved to a new fast Wetherby - Leeds service. I wish it luck. Done well bus is a great product/service. We need more people to be using it. That wont happen imho without a big shift in complementary policies in tandem with the service upgrades.

The alternative on offer is the Coastliner. Nice service but around an extra hour a day to my total commute. I'm struggling to sell it to myself. But at least i have alternatives. How many stories of the last bus are we seeing or going to see in the next 6 months?

There is no buffer to support the running of this service compared to that on the rail network. Even (or perhaps especially) the premium bus service is the poor relation to rail in policy terms.

I can park in council car park in leeds all day for cost of a return ticket. So hard to see what complementary offer to bus company was.

Last ride on tonight as service stops on 19/11. A fast bus with great comfort and facilities and top staff. Cheaper than train. Plenty of people on it but not enough. So it gets cut. Some reflections - thread

Agree, was great to show how much we have done in a short time. I feel energised for the next phase of scheme development, knowing we can continue to improve and deliver a great active travel network for the people of Leeds.

Great to host colleagues from @activetraveleng & @Sustrans in Leeds today and to show them the work we've done to enhance walking & cycling infrastructure & create new public realm. Some fascinating exchanges of ideas. We're proud of what's been done, but there is much to do!

I cannot underline strongly enough how important it is that we start working to what the climate budgets actually mean. Infrastricture planning is working to a fiction. I see no legitimacy in requiring local carbon reduction commitments in LTPs if the DfT dont release.Demand this

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.
Sound efficient?

Remember, when the fresh snow flies in your city, it reveals how much we’ve over-designed our streets for cars making them faster & more dangerous, and how much space we could reclaim for people & public life. We call them #sneckdowns. HT

This. 96% of all trips in uk are under 35 miles. E-bikes are fab but not for everyone. The regulation change for powered light vehicles is key. This transition could happen quickly and be affordable.

As cars grow expensive and enormous, the disruption of the automobile is becoming a real possibility.
How might challengers appear? In the innocuous form of e-cargo bikes and “souped-up golf carts.”

I wondered how the speed of inter-city public transport varies across GB. So I made a travel time matrix and converted it to average speeds. 50mph+ is competitive with cars. Shows the importance of direct services and reducing connection times over high top speeds.
