    I spoke with of about the roots of addiction. Whatever the substance or behaviour of choice, pain is always at the root, hence the compulsive flight from self via numbing out or getting high, in spite of negative consequences.

    5/ Because brain development happens under the influence of the environment (genes are much less determinant than widely believed), stressed homes rear children with stressed brains whose pain- and stress-relief, motivation, and "feel-good" centers are literally handicapped.

    4/ it is trauma and stress that predispose people to long-term dependencies. Yes, trauma in adulthood (e.g. war) can lead people to short-term addictions, but who does and doesn't desist comes down to a predisposition set up early in life. The link isn't random, either:

    3/ that their products hook and kill people. And these are, indeed, powerful drugs. However, in themselves, pills are not necessarily more inherently addictive than is sex, or shopping, or eating. The research shows that no matter the substance or addiction of choice...

    2/ ...not just symptom treatment. In the interview,  asks "can't pills kind of get everybody?”  Good question. The answer is yes and no. Certainly there's a supply side to it: pharma companies flooded the market with opioids knowing full well...
