Today it's 5 years since the publication of The Cambridge Book of Magic: A Tudor Necromancer's Manual. I've been surprised how popular the book has proved - for a translated Latin text on ritual magic...! There's a 10% discount on the book this week:

I was today years old when I found out that 'Coney Weston' is an advanced corruption of an Old English name equivalent to 'Kingston' and my mind is BLOWN. Nothing to do with westerly bunnies at all...

I don't know if anyone has ever made a formal estimate, but if I had to guess I would say that about 10% of medieval Latin writings (excluding the almost infinite legal stuff) have been edited. Within that, only a small portion have been translated

For someone trained in Classical Latin, like me, medieval Latin was a shock. You couldn't just go and find a red Loeb. Going into medieval Latin is like saddling up and heading into the Wild West. You have to unlearn a lot of things

When I first started studying medieval Latin I was touchingly naive. We were asked to find a text that had never previously been published and translate it. 'Oh no!' I thought, 'How will I do this? Surely all the medieval Latin texts have been published and translated!'😂😂😂

I'm having far too much fun transcribing a medieval manuscript that describes day by day the descent of Bury St Edmunds into total anarchy. We should definitely start planning to celebrate the 700th anniversary in 2027 with some re-enacted carnage

There's a sweet spot somewhere on the line between March and Whittlesey where, if you're really paying attention, you can see Ely in one direction and Peterborough in the other

This was, of course, the date of the surrender of Waltham Abbey to the crown - the last English monastery to be dissolved
