Please note that my old Sheffield website will be taken down in a few days. All the pdfs that were available there should now be available at my current website; in particular, non-specialist things at . Please let me know if something seems to be missing!

  2. Well thanks to I used Xournal to project slides on my 2-in-1 computer running Linux, and wrote on them with a random stylus pen I got from The Internet as the physical store didn't have any. I really enjoyed it! I am hopeful it will help my students.

We're celebrating Schubert's birthday at the Liederstube tonight with an all-Schubert Liederstube! Picking up the annual Schubertiade tradition from PianoForte. My first concert ever in Chicago was Schwanengesang with Paul Geiger, Schubertiade 2005 :)

Argh it took me until 12 noon just to wake up enough to make coffee! I need to go back to setting up the espresso machine the night before. I haven't needed to do that for a while.

Alternatively, a way to do this on my current tablet that runs Linux, other than dual booting it or running a windows emulator? I can't find a Linux touchscreen pdf reader that will let me sensibly draw freehand on it.

By "showing pdf slides" I mean connecting it to a projector. I see that all sorts of HDMI adaptors are available, so a USB C port will suffice. I do need a pdf view that will flip pages without scrolling or doing anything else "fancy" in the form of page turns.

Hello, I'm actually looking for advice! Educator types: I would like a tablet to use for showing pdf slides and writing/drawing on them with a stylus in real time in class, saving as a pdf to share. *Non-ipad* recommendations please. (If you question that I'll just mute you.)

Ooh yay! I have figured out how to get lilypond, pstricks and beamer at the same time! However it does not seem that I can put \pause inside lilypond code.

I find it hardest to go to the gym when I'm being *slightly* productive. When I'm being very productive it's fine because I've already got a lot done, and when I'm not being productive at all it's also fine because I'm not getting anything done either...

This is amazing. My favourite part is I had to read it twice before I noticed anything. Intuitively it made sense to me...

Body-mass index is a flawed way of measuring health, but even an imperfect mathematical model can be useful, writes . via

Because you know I love a good all-nighter. A lot of my best work has been done by sleeping less. Is this bad for my health? Who knows - but it's good for my emotional well-being. That's important too.

Or what about this: 1. sleep is procrastination 2. we think sleep is good and procrastination is bad, hmm. 3. maybe sleep isn't always good and procrasination isn't always bad. Maybe this is what I actually think.

What about the other possibility? 1. sleep is procrastination 2. sleep is good 3. therefore procrastination is not necessarily bad. This is what I actually think.

The deeper point is that some people are jumping to the conclusion that I am saying sleep is bad, 1. sleep is procrastination 2. procrasination is bad 3. therefore sleep is bad. This is not what I'm saying!

There's an awful lot of missing of my point going on here so I guess I'll explain it... "Procrastinate" etymologically means "put off until tomorrow". That is what sleep does, at least when we do it at night, because we sleep until tomorrow.

I have managed to convince myself that going to the gym is self-care. This is a big step! Now if I could convince myself that tidying is self-care then we'll have a whole new radical approach to 2020. I'm not really motivated by outcomes. I have to enjoy the process.

I know an engineer (Rob Miller) who has used some topology in his work on air flow around jet engines, I think.
