The new “double mutation” variant from India 🇮🇳 #B1617 is surging fast in UK—5x increase in % of #COVID19 cases in just 2 weeks. Same with the South Africa 🇿🇦 #B1351 variant. When did they increase? After schools reopened. And keep in mind—it’s rising despite high vaccinations.pic.twitter.com/fzZC3VAJdZ

        2) How does the India variant compare to #B117? It seems to be increasing faster than any other variant in the UK. It’s outcompeting it.pic.twitter.com/bM3gmK5xVP

        4) UK is now able to track all of these carefully because it is sequencing 20,000 cases a week to identify variants. This is a huge volume given UK cases are relatively low.https://www.cogconsortium.uk/

✈️ Outbreak—47 positive #COVID19 of a 188 seat Vistara flight from New Delhi to Hong Kong have tested positive, after all tested negative 72 hours prior. The scariest thing? Only 8 detected before began quarantine. 39 only identified later during hotel quarantine, 22 at day 12!🧵 pic.twitter.com/TTkBetdHrH

        6) in India, some early data is showing that somehow #B117 is being outcompeted. The #B1617 is growing fast and becoming dominant. India doesn’t have enough reliable sequencing so this is just scratching at the surface.https://twitter.com/drericding/status/1383737643452669958?s=21 …

The double mutation variant—classified as #B1617–was the most common in the samples sequenced in India 🇮🇳 in recent 60 days at 24%. This new variant found in Maharashtra may be becoming the most prevalent among all variants in India. THREAD on VARIANTS, VACCINES & POTENTIAL FUTURES: I’ve been looking at data on sequenced variants. I’ve also been thinking about our vax programme & India. TLDR: the Indian variant needs to trigger surge testing in England. And India needs to be on red list. 1/23

        8) is #B117 truly being outcompeted and declining in India? Unclear due to limited sequencing. But it’s definitely not surging like #b1617 is in India. That is worrisome. https://outbreak.info/situation-reports?pango=B.1.1.7&selected=IND&loc=GBR&loc=USA&loc=USA_US-CA&loc=IND …pic.twitter.com/9BavSBCRl3

Co-infection is bad news—Scientists in Brazil have identified two cases where people were simultaneously infected with two different variants of #COVID19. Co-infection raises the likelihood of *recombination* admixture that generates more variants. 🧵 https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/11/americas/brazil-variants-simultaneous-infection-intl/index.html … pic.twitter.com/znpZKlx7BU

And 1/3 of all international flights landing in Toronto had Covid. 11) to be clear, since I wasn’t precise, the school reopening comment was directly referring to B1351 (mentioned in preceding sentence in my top post) for which there is some evidence it was school driven.https://twitter.com/chrischirp/status/1383905281222975488 …

I've now looked at just the 4 new variants as a % of overall cases. SA (B1351) has been kept to small numbers by combo of lockdown & surge testing. It started increasing after schools opened. Most recent spike might be the big S London cluster & associated surge testing. 7/23 pic.twitter.com/VAw1ozxBPL
