I rigged one up when doing some home repairs a couple of years ago. They are very effective, but not quiet. Get white duct tape and seal it up tight around the edges - air takes the path of least resistance, and the filter is resistance.

I built a UVGI system for around $150. It's not much more complicated than that, much more efficient. A couple of pieces ducting, an inline fan, lamp fitting, UVC LED, aluminium foil, two mesh vents. Yes kids, UV light is harmful, so make sure it's properly light sealed.

The drawback of using a HEPA filter is it takes a lot of energy to suck air through. So you need a more powerful fans to get the same throughput of air. Also does not kill microbes, and they may pass through it.

Indeed. Ventilation for better air quality is now one of the most important.
