Key word is “randomized trials are underway”. Generally I don’t like single/scattered anecdotes since they can be cherry picked. So let’s wait for results. Also many trials are in Wuhan, so let’s be grateful they are contributing to our knowledge of 🦠

Should we practice social distancing? I don’t know. Good article.

It's looking increasingly unlikely that can be contained. I spoke with this weekend on what that might look like, and what we still don't know.

Social distancing tools that might be used to slow spread of are like Swiss cheese, exCDC director Julie Gerberding told . “Each individual slice has a lot of holes but if you stack up a number of them then you have a pretty good barrier.”

    2) That said, they do not have the exact mutation rate calculated yet. But the study authors called it striking because 2 such nonsynonymous substitution mutations (which changes amino acid) within just 1 family is unusual. It doesn’t mean more dangerous.

Evidence emerging that the new 🦠 seems to mutate rather fast. Authors say “Close monitoring of the virus’s mutation, evolution, and adaptation is needed”. In a family of 6 infected people, 2 ‘nonsynonymous’ mutations occurred during human-to-human transmission.🤔

The real suffering out there clearly shows this epidemic not “just the flu”. To deny the severity of those suffering by merely dismissing it is to deny their humanity. And this virus can afflict anyone if it came to our shores. Let’s all be more open minded and compassionate. 🙏

    2) This was one patient, not a group of patients tested with either drug or control. Why can’t you rely on just n=1? Because N=1 can never prove anything. Also maybe it’s been individually tried 10 other times with no success and doesn’t get reported — reporting bias then happens

    2) I don’t necessarily agree with this ‘hot take’ quote from . I was just sharing the interview. Healthcare workers treating patients with flu/pneumonia should wear masks. But most outside Asia, I’m not certain. As for airports, I do think it a good precaution.

The world economy is going to be battered by this for a while. Shanghai Composite fell 7.7%, while Shenzhen Composite dropped 8.4%. It’s only going to get worse before it gets better.

    5) another caveat is that the viruses tested, “TGEV and MHV may be more resistant to inactivation on surfaces than previously studied human coronaviruses.” authors also add that “SARS-CoV has been reported to survive for 36 h on stainless steel (WHO).” So don’t assume = new🦠.

    4) the only rare exception case seems to be at the extreme of low temperatures + combined with low humidity. Here is the graph of 2 unrelated coronaviruses at 4°C and (a) 20% RH, (b) 50% RH, and (c) 80% RH. Again these are NOT the same as the new coronavirus.

    3) Again, the above study is not from the from Wuhan. So you most likely cannot get it from mail, but a teeny tiny amount of other coronaviruses can survive dependent on humidity. Don’t panic please.

    2) That said, there is not much experimental research yet on the new yet, but older coronavirus study shows majority inactivation: Survival at 20°C and (a) 20% relative humidity(RH), (b) 50% RH, and (c) 80% RH. -1 log10 is -10x, so -2log10 is -100x.

Reposting: I want to clarify since - I’m seeing these 🦠 rumors float around. You most likely cannot catch the coronavirus from mail or from cargo container shipments from China. But jury is still out, since we don’t have new direct experiments. But let’s see other coronavirus:

    4) Please everyone stop being cynical about flu science with pharma conspiracies. I have no love of pharma. In fact, I’ve pissed off pharma more than most out there. I’ve fought pharma corruption for long time. But still get your flu shot. It’ll help u/ur family. Hugs not drugs.
