Edward Ziter's "Kean, Byron, and Fantasies of Miscegenation" might be of interest? There is a section on Kean's "tawny face" Othello in the context of C19 (especially Romantic) Orientalism and British military involvement in the Middle East.

This is very oblique, but in 1982, Barbara Everett in "Spanish Othello" (Shakespeare Survey 35) describes "our" understanding of Othello as (sub-Saharan) "African" as only about a century old, implying a pre-Victorian Othello associated w/ N. Africa/Middle East.

Thank you! This might be a good source, even though I’m trying to argue the opposite.
