It is the work of whiteness. Similarly, because there is a sex worker involved, the potential for SWERFs to come into this is high. But I also think that choices made do speak to enabling white supremacy and that escalating this institutionally was a choice made.

I hope that this can be deescalated while minimising harm, but I find that's rarely the case. This is why my earlier tweets were about what we offer community at the end of this: we need to be so careful not to let white supremacy or SWERF ideology gain space. And they will try.

For me, that's work we need to commit to and that's where I want to put my energy. YMMV but that's where I am on this.

We would love for all of this to have ended in November but that was made impossible by the person obsessed with making sure WOC behaved in a way that she deemed appropriate online. All of the escalation has been done by one person. Responses to that harm are being weighed by 1/

Some (not you) as equal to that harm. Which is a false narrative and one that paints us as aggressors as well. We are simply bring out into the open what she has been doing and how she has deliberately targeted us. 2/2

I agree. I think that by insisting that complex conversations like reclaiming/ renegotiating access to identity function through an insistence of us vs them, it became a system of all or nothing which is actively harmful in these sorts of discussions. And it spiralled from there.

To then use that system to argue that BIPOC scholars already targeted for antiracist work weren't antiracist enough is its own can of worms, and it's not one I agree with either. I think this was actively harmful, and doesn't engage with histories of the costs to BIPOC scholars.

I also think it is harmful to nitpick instances where BIPOC scholars doing antiracist work aren't allowed time to learn and think through their needs and responses. That time to pause can itself be weaponised and used to claim a lack of engagement or commitment, which is untrue.

I can see how incredibly harmful this has been and the toll it's taken on you and so many others I hold dear and whose work in the field I value. And I know how hard it is to keep working while this is ongoing, while every new email & tweet makes your stomach jump and curdle.

I don't know what I can offer outside of saying that I am here. I am doing the work. I'm not going anywhere.
