I also don't think online searches for ancestry are reasonable ways in which to talk about marginalised populations, both of which have fled persecution and often had to deny their heritages. Finding ways back to belonging & community is complex & uneasy in these circumstances.

I agree. I think that by insisting that complex conversations like reclaiming/ renegotiating access to identity function through an insistence of us vs them, it became a system of all or nothing which is actively harmful in these sorts of discussions. And it spiralled from there.

To then use that system to argue that BIPOC scholars already targeted for antiracist work weren't antiracist enough is its own can of worms, and it's not one I agree with either. I think this was actively harmful, and doesn't engage with histories of the costs to BIPOC scholars.
