I'm teaching Frankenstein and we've looked at Shelley's critique of Christianity but I'm trying to plan a lesson on how she uses Islam and relies on Orientalism in the chapters with Safie. Anyone done anything on this? @Wordsworthians @KSAAcomm @Team_English1 @DiLeed

Yes. Definitely. White feminism doing its thing?! This racialised colorism plays out across a lot of texts in ways I didn’t use to notice previously. I no longer feel at all secure in what I thought I knew as a framing for canon texts.

Thanks so much for engaging with this it’s really helped. What I think is good is that this is all so clear in the text (weird there isn’t more secondary edu. stuff on it tbh) but means I avoid a bad history lesson and can let the text speak to other texts and the students.
