I'm teaching Frankenstein and we've looked at Shelley's critique of Christianity but I'm trying to plan a lesson on how she uses Islam and relies on Orientalism in the chapters with Safie. Anyone done anything on this? @Wordsworthians @KSAAcomm @Team_English1 @DiLeed

It’s interesting to unpack the literary whiteness at play here on different levels. There’s often a tension btw authorial intent and what is said. And if reading while white/educated into literary whiteness then it can take helluva reset to see/account for those inconsistencies.

We also have to think in terms of European empire which was built on the idea of white racial differences from the subject races. While the Ottomans were conquered by the Europeans, they get racialized because it was an Islamicate empire. Saifye’s whiteness & beauty are racial.
