My favorite play RII ends with Henry IV vowing to go to the Holy Land, and HV ends with Henry declaring that his son will beard "the Turk," in the Holy Land. What is up with the consolidation of English power through imagined violence against Muslims!?!?! #Shakespeare

RII is one of my favorites too. What do you make of the fact that Henrys IV, V, and VI never make it to the Holy Land? How should we read that?

Seeks conquest and territory. The only difference is that it’s licensed because he’s English. Also he hasn’t participated in the “barbarous” Ottoman custom of fratricide, which is what the placating gesture in 2H4 is about. You can read all about this in my forthcoming book

And of course it's an act of fratricide, (Richard getting Gaunt to connive to the murder of Woodstock) that opens the tetralogy, and Bolingbroke murders his cousin to become king, so disavowing fratricide at the end makes sense.
