US university educators are all like “I canceled my students’ midterms & gave them extra credit for liking a photo of my cat on instagram” and UK/European university educators are all like “I have submitted the fifteen forms required to maybe change this essay assignment in 2025”

Yes, but medical and disability accommodations are also linked to central policies here as are sexual harassment etc. but we are encouraged to reproduce them in our syllabi (at least at my small liberal arts college). Pandemic accommodation is a matter of instructor discretion.

There’s usually standard policy and standard wordings, though we’d tailor them where appropriate. The distinction is really that policies and practices are standardised; content and the way policies are communicated within courses are more individual to tutor.

So, I can’t change the length or availability of our ‘grace period’ extensions, for instance, but I can control how I talk about it with my own students, if that makes sense!
