US university educators are all like “I canceled my students’ midterms & gave them extra credit for liking a photo of my cat on instagram” and UK/European university educators are all like “I have submitted the fifteen forms required to maybe change this essay assignment in 2025”

That’s okay! We look at your flexibility with envy :-) We also massively changed assessments during pandemic, but it happens at a standardised, institutional level, rather than individual tutor choices.

Not everyone was allowed to change assessments massively during the pandemic even institutionally. I was forced to make students last year write 8k word essays, due weeks after first lockdown, worth 100% of the final grade, despite nearly begging for permission to shorten them.

how it’s worked in the UK and Europe, by and large, is that at the most students have been given extensions, but staff have been held to the same (already very tight) marking deadlines (and sometimes not informed about the submission extensions...)

The pandemic has really shown up the flaws in this really heavy bureaucracy - the idea of still holding students and staff to previous standards of productivity during the last year is objectively awful but that’s how it’s been

Yes, changing assignments midterm is a necessity in the pandemic. And also outside the pandemic. Because that's what students think would make sense.

I've been coming at this from the opposite side - moving from UK to Ireland and getting huge amounts of freedom to write my own assignment. I did go traditional for various reasons, but it was so nice to realise I could adapt if students needed.
