US university educators are all like “I canceled my students’ midterms & gave them extra credit for liking a photo of my cat on instagram” and UK/European university educators are all like “I have submitted the fifteen forms required to maybe change this essay assignment in 2025”

We can’t usually change them after about 8-12 months before the module begins.
-
I mean, we can set the actual *questions* later, but the format, length, weighting etc are all locked in long long before (and are usually closely constrained by standardised guidelines)

I can't change the assignments for next academic year at this point...

Of course not! It's anarchy like that that is holding back the US system! Oh wait...

We can change specific question but not type so can't change an essay to a presentation or a research report to an interpretive dance. We also can't give marks for participation or extra credit for reading module guide. We only mark on the quality of work produced.
-
And those marks appear categorically lower than students are used to in N. America. A 65 or a 72 is considered excellent marks in the UK. I wouldn't have been allowed to write a dissertation with the same grades at my Alma mater in Canada.

Not just mid-term, but ever, without submitting pages and pages of paperwork. I've had assessments that just don't work and need to be rethought, but are written into the degree programme learning outcomes... So tough bananas, you can't change it to fix it.
