Sometimes it’s literally about pronunciation- letting them read Shakespeare aloud without worrying how to say a word, but then letting them know how other people will expect them to say it. It’s all really tricky.

Also seen when it comes to teaching grammar/mechanics in English classrooms. It not included b/c it has been viewed as inhibiting creativity and development of ideas- a negative power structure. However, students struggle w/ comprehension/ close reading/writing as result.

Delpit touches on this in the first part of Other People’s Children when she points out the difference between process and skills approaches and the equity problems they can engender.
