I think about this often in the high school classroom- the balance between giving my students access to a vocabulary that others will perceive as a signal of belonging, while not limiting their education to that way of thinking.

I highly recommend Lisa Delpit's Other People's Children. It is incredible for thinking through the issues you are talking about, like pronunciation.

Sometimes it’s literally about pronunciation- letting them read Shakespeare aloud without worrying how to say a word, but then letting them know how other people will expect them to say it. It’s all really tricky.

Also seen when it comes to teaching grammar/mechanics in English classrooms. It not included b/c it has been viewed as inhibiting creativity and development of ideas- a negative power structure. However, students struggle w/ comprehension/ close reading/writing as result.
