To be clear, he did not receive a degree from our department, and I do not see our faculty as complicit with him. But he knew what he needed to do to get admitted, and he had the imprimatur of degrees from 2 other fancy institutions, which gives him gravitas in the public sphere.

That’s a relief to hear about your program. It’s not always the case and as you point out it’s really the institutional pedigree that uplifts these folks because even as the right disclaims elitism, they worship it.

going to college and majoring in the humanities isn’t automatically going to make you anti-racist. Colleges and the humanities uphold white supremacy. There are people doing the work of dismantling the systemic inequality in the system and curricula but it’s not a given.
