I think that's the reason (for me anyway) the selling of Marina to creepy af Lord Rutledge landed differently than Nigel Berbrooke's attempts to sexual assault Daphne Bridgerton. Both gross, but the sexualizing of Marina Thomson as a Black woman lands differently.

Yes. I couldn't say this in my essay (still trying to respect the no spoiler zone), but there are 4 or 5 moments like this, and I wondered if the problem is not a "failing" on the part of the storytellers or the reality that you can't depict this world w/o this kind of violence.

I'm working on an essay (which does reference yours) but it would include spoilers. I have thought about whether or not to pitch it.

I have a lot I want to say about "soundness" and the treatment of the younger Duke of Hastings too.

But I absolutely agree that it's really impossible to address about anti-Black racism without also dealing with violence since they're so intertwined.

And, of course, the other thing is that Marina is so barely present in the novels (so much so that I had to fix a reference in my essay) that she feels like more a creation of the adaptation than the original source.

And this is itself so important because what does this have to tell us(!) about what this adaptation requires of Marina? What does white womanhood require her to be?

Let me know what you think of her conversation with Lady F. I think it's important to draw distinctions between kinds of white womanhood. When Penelope snaps at Eloise "not everyone is a Bridgerton" I cheered. Daphne is choosing; some of those girls are hustling.

I cheered that moment too, but her later actions were problematic to say the least.

It's awful. It's also a heartbreaking departure from the book because it ruins what was such a lovely friendship. Penelope in the novel is smart and resourceful, but the novel version of her would never do that. That she does it to Marina makes it even worse.

I don't know how the character recovers from this public humiliation she inflicted on Marina. So much for girl power and solidarity. I'm shocked that many of the reviews don't pause on this moment.

I think they're all too comfortable ignoring what happens to her because of who Penelope is in the story. This might be a reach but I'm reminded of how Olivia in the Woman of Colour, A Tale, is excised from the all white world her presence threatens to destabilize.

Yup. I agree. The character's book history insulates her from criticism. Her jealousy was so ugly and yet she won't have to own up to it.
