Absolutely. The white savior complex was real. Along with the considerable sexualization of him.

I *slightly* disagree, but I know it has a lot to do with what people think should happen in a historical romance. Women and love almost always "heal" and domesticate rakes, so where do we draw the line between the messed up expectations of the genre & a Black man as the hero?

It's awful. It's also a heartbreaking departure from the book because it ruins what was such a lovely friendship. Penelope in the novel is smart and resourceful, but the novel version of her would never do that. That she does it to Marina makes it even worse.
