Lady M found a lot to admire in the lives of elite Ottoman women and the kinds of freedoms they could enjoy that were denied her in England. She's great to read, although I'm not a fan of the racist letters when she's going through Africa on her way back.
That's a relief. I read her letters for the first time while I was living in Istanbul. My first publication was on the letters and her self-fashioning through her experiences with elite Ottoman women.
