Yuuuuuuuuuup! It's a signifier of being (white) cultured, not any kind of interest in or engagement with the plays. Where's the article comparing current circumstances to Middleton or Jonson, who are much better analogies?

All of the comparisons would achieve the same thing as those periods are ones the consolidate European whiteness. Shakespeare’s just the biggest white man in the room.
