I have similarly given a range of options to my students and the flexibility to develop their own approach/outcome as it suits their talents and the questions that animate their projects. It's the opposite of demanding conformity and allows all students to flourish.

Mine too! I found that several of those students who chose to write a formal academic essay were all the more engaged with their work, and thought more carefully about the essay form, for having actively chosen it.

Thank you for clarifying. As an older ugrad who didn't come up with the internet, I sometimes felt like the more "flexible" assignments were less abt the info & more abt creative uses of tech. This is also why I stay away from digital history... no creativity.
